Facilitating Verbal Communication

  • Speak at a normal intensity at a slightly slower rate of speech using “clear speech” (see clear speech).  Always use your voice, even when you sign.

  • Position yourself 2-6 feet from your child.  Obtain your child’s attention before you start talking.

  • Use normal mouth movements with your mouth clearly visible and the light source on you face (not your back).

  • Talk about things that interest your child in sentences 1-3 words longer than the sentences your child uses spontaneously.

  • If you don’t understand what your child says, use “repair strategies”.

  • Monitor your child’s comprehension of what is being said.  Utilize repair strategies to facilitate comprehension.
