Troubleshooting Your Clarion Cochlear Implant

Click on the symptom closest to what you are experiencing to learn more about possible causes and solutions.

Battery Charge Status

To check the battery charge status, turn the speech processor (SP) off (black dot on the program switch) and then back to program position 1, 2, or 3. (if uncertain, check with the parent/guardian for the appropriate position.) The LED light will blink as follows:

  • 4 quick blinks indicate that the battery is fully charged

  • 2 to 3 quick blinks indicate that the battery is sufficiently charged to power the system

  • 1 quick blink indicates that the battery charge is nearly depleted and should last about two hours or less

Lock Status

When the speech processor program switch is turned from the off position to positions 1, 2, or 3 and the battery charge sequence is complete, the LED indicator begins to flash approximately once per second. Flashing will continue until the headpiece is properly positioned on the head. Once the headpiece (HP) is transmitting to the implant, the flashing will stop. The LED indicator may only flash once.

No Sound Heard by User

While the user is wearing the speech processor and headpiece, turn the SP off and then back to position 1 and watch the LED Light. If you see:

  • No light, replace the CLARION battery pack with another fully charged battery pack or 3 AA size alkaline batteries.

  • Continual blinking, replace the cable.

  • 1 to 3 blinks and then no sound heard by user, replace the headpiece. NOTE: If a headpiece is not available, try an auxiliary microphone.

  • 1 quick blink means the system is functioning normally and sounds should be heard.

User Hears Static Sounds

Replace the cable.

User Hears Muffled or Distorted Sounds

Remove any material which may be covering the headpiece microphone opening.

If distortion continues, use the auxiliary microphone to compare sound quality. Inform parents if the problem appears related to headpiece.

Headpiece Repels When Placed next to the Head

Remove the headpiece cover, turn the magnet over and replace the cover.

  • While holding the HP in the palm of your hand, gently press the ribbed HP cover and turn it to the left as far as it will go.

  • Lift the HP cover off.

  • Take the magnet out of the HP, turn it over, and put it back in the HP.

  • Put the HP cover back on by lining up the nubs on the HP cover with their respective slots in the HP.

  • Gently press the HP cover into the HP.

  • While holding the HP in the palm of your hand, gently press the ribbed HP cover and turn it to the right as far as it will go.

Headpiece or Speech Processor gets Wet

Turn the device off immediately.

Contact appropriate support person for further instructions.

IMPORTANT: Do not attempt to clean or dry unit(s). Do not use if exposure to fluids is suspected.

Speech Processor, Headpiece or Cable needs to be Cleaned

Clean each component with a soft dry or lightly dampened cloth. Never use solvents or abrasive cleaners which might damage the finish of the component.

After trying the above procedures, if the problem persists, contact the cochlear implant center (or the child's parent/guardian) for support.

NOTE: Please contact your cochlear implant center before using auxiliary equipment (i.e. FM system) (or the child's parent/gaurdian) to ensure compatibility.
