Suggestions
for Talking with a Child who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Reduce
background sound (turn TV/radio down, dishwasher off, wait
until dog stops barking, etc.)

Obtain
the child's attention.

Get
down to the child's level.

Your
face should be clearly visible (e.g. no hands or objects
in front of your face, no gum/food in your mouth) with light
source on your face, not your back.

Speak
clearly at a moderate pace and volume while facing child
with distance of 2-6 feet.

Use
gestures and facial expression.

Confirm
that a child understands important information.

Rephrase
if you are not understood.
