Auditory Training

Auditory training helps your child learn to attach meaning to the sounds around him/her.  The child initially learns to recognize “suprasegmentals” or patterns of speech:

  • Long vs. short sounds

  • Loud vs. soft sounds

  • One sound vs. many sounds

  • Single syllable vs. multiple syllables (e.g. ‘ba’ vs. ‘babababa’)

  • One syllable word vs. multiple syllable words (e.g. cup vs. peanut butter)

The child then learns to differentiate between speech sounds which are progressively more similar, first in single words then in progressively longer sentences.  The child will also learn to differentiate between environmental sounds (e.g. a fire truck vs. a cat meowing) in increasing number, similarity and complexity.  The child will learn speechreading as well as communication repair strategies.  Adult use of “clear speech” will facilitate perception of speech.
