Selected Resources

Sign systems that use manually coded English include Signed English and Signed Exact English (SEE).  Sign systems represent the translation of English word by word in signs.  It follows the syntax, rules, grammar order and such of spoken English.  We have several books, tapes and other resources related to manually coded English. A sample of these is listed below, as well as other resources you might want to explore.  A complete list of library resources is available on our website.  To borrow any of the materials from our library, just give us a call or send us an email.

Books

1.                  The Comprehensive Signed English Dictionary, 1983, Gallaudet University Press, is illustrated with more than 3,000 signs.

2.                  The Silent Garden, by Paul Ogden, 1996.  This book contains a detailed description of several signing systems, including SEE and Signed English.

3.                  When Your Child is Deaf, by David Luterman, 1991.  This book explains the differences between various sign systems and the controversies surrounding each.

4.                  Children’s Books: Our children’s collection includes several books that show the words and signs associated with each story.  These include Popsicles are Cold, At Grandma’s House, and Mother Goose in Sign.

Videos

1.                  Basic Sign Language for Children.  These three videos present a basic signed English vocabulary.  Half the screen shows a picture of the object/action/word and the other half shows a person demonstrating the sign.  The introduction to the tape says it is directed towards children with developmental disabilities but the tape’s simple format is appropriate for any viewer learning to sign.
