MN Hands & Voices has a large and growing collection of resources to support parents as they raise children who are deaf or hard of hearing. We have approximately 300 books, over 300 videotapes, and a small but expanding collection of computer software.

 

We have several books, tapes and other resources related to Cued Speech. A sample of these is listed below, as well as other resources you might want to explore.  A complete list of library resources is available on our website.  To borrow any of the materials from our library, just give us a call or send us an e-mail.

 

Books

 

1.                  Silent Dancing: A Journey of Discovery, by Osmond Crosby, 1995.  This book is a parent’s journal on dealing with deafness and their choice of cued speech as a communication method.  It is “filled with useful information and inspiration.”

 

2.                  The Cued Speech Resource Book: For Parents of Deaf Children, by R. Orin Cornett and Mary Elsie Daisey, 1992.  This book helps parents “acquire the skills and understanding they need in order to meet the needs of their child with Cued Speech.”

 

3.                  Choices in Deafness: A Parents’ Guide, edited by Sue Schwartz, 1996.  This book contains information on Cued Speech, the Oral Approach and Total Communication.

 

4.                  The Silent Garden: Raising Your Deaf Child, by Paul W. Ogden, 1996.  This book discusses Cued Speech as one of several communication alternatives for deaf and hard of hearing children.

 

Computer Software

 

1.                  Cue That Word, 1996.  This disk resource is designed for beginning cuers age 6 through adult.  Learn to cue more than 150 illustrated simple words, grouped by vowel or subject.

 

2.                  First Color Words, 1999.  This disk resource is for beginning readers.  Basic colors are presented through cueing, ASL, fingerspelling and speech.  Four games teach the reading and spelling of the color names.

 

Videos

 

1.                  An Adventure in Cued Speech, produced by Alina Mills and the National Cued Speech Association, 1999.  This is “an informational video presenting Cued Speech users, their families and professionals, demonstrating and discussing Cued Speech in a variety of settings.”

 

2.                  Becoming a Proficient Cuer, video/workbook, by Melanie Metzger and Earl Fleetwood, 1995.  This resource is designed to: “(1) teach Cued Speech to hearing individuals who are learning the system for the first time and (2) define acceptable cueing proficiency parameters for both beginners and those who have already learned to cue.”

 

3.                  Building Cue Reading, by Melanie Metzger and Earl Fleetwood, 1993.  This pair of video tapes focuses on receptive skills development.

 

4.                  Discovering Cued Speech Instructional Video and Workbook, Pamela H. Beck, 2000.  “You will learn to cue with our four instructors.  Demonstrations with children throughout.  Designed for teens and adults who are hearing, hard of hearing or deaf.”

 

National and State Organizations to Contact

 

1.                  Cued Speech Association of Minnesota.  This organization provides information and support regarding the use of Cued Speech for deaf children.  Services include information sheets about problems of deafness, cued speech, and cued speech transliterator certification, an on-line newsletter, and cued speech camp.  The Association can be contacted at 952-929-3965 or write to 6017 Kellogg Avenue, Edina, MN 55424.  The website: www.cuedspeechminnesota.org.

3.                  MN Hands & Voices offers information and links related to a wide variety of issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing children and their families, including information on Cued Speech.  Visit www.familysupportconnection.org.
