MN Hands & Voices has a large and growing collection of resources to support parents as they raise children who are deaf or hard of hearing. We have approximately 300 books, over 300 videotapes, and a small but expanding collection of computer software.

We have several books, tapes and other resources related to Cochlear Implants.  A sample of these is listed below, as well as other resources you might want to explore.  A complete list of library resources is available on our website.  To borrow any of the materials from our library, just give us a call or send us an e-mail.

Books

1.                  Cochlear Implant:  Auditory Training Guidebook, by Dave Sindrey, 1997.  This guidebook is targeted toward parents and professionals working with children age four and older.

2.                  The Silent Garden:  Raising Your Deaf Child, by Paul W. Ogden, 1998.  The author discusses the pros and cons of cochlear implants and other communication options.  He reaches a negative conclusion about their use.

3.                  Wired for Sound: A Journey Into Hearing, by Beverly Biderman, 1998.  In this book, the author describes her positive experience in receiving a cochlear implant at age 46.

Videos

1.                  Videos from Implant Manufacturers.  Manufacturers of cochlear implants, such as Clarion and the Nucleus 24 Contour, have produced videos that explain how implants work and what advantages they offer.  These videos promote implants in general and their own products, in particular.

2.                  Cochlear Implant:  The Deaf Community’s View.  In this video, produced in 1994 by the Deaf Communication Foundation, several Deaf people discuss the disadvantages of cochlear implants.  The tape begins with an explanation of how hearing and cochlear implants work.
